Soon, Ganon, the King of Evil, would make his way into the Light World and bring it to ruin. Link had to defeat Ganon and take back the Triforce before that happened. When the seal broke, the sacrificial maidens descended from the Seven Sages were flung into the Dark World. Link traversed both the Light and Dark Worlds in search of the six maidens and Princess Zelda. Upon saving them, the barrier around Ganon’s Tower was broken. Link destroyed Agahnim in their second battle and made his way to Ganon. After a fierce battle, Link vanquished the monster and regained the Triforce. Placing his hand on the Triforce, Link wished to restore the world to its former glory. With that, all who had fallen victim to Ganon’s evil were resurrected, and Hyrule was peaceful once more. With the Triforce returned to the protection of the royal family, the Dark World born of Ganon's wicked heart gradually faded away.
~ Zelda Encyclopedia describing Link defeating Ganon and taking back the Triforce

The owl that guided Link then revealed itself to be a part of the Wind Fish’s spirit. He had been tasked with guarding this dream world while the Wind Fish slept. But Nightmares had begun to seep in through a tear in the dream and plague the island. It was then that Link arrived. When the owl first saw Link on the beach, he was convinced Link was the hero destined to end the Nightmares. Koholint Island began to fade away when Link awakened the Wind Fish, who left Link with these words: “Someday, thou may recall this island... That memory must be the real dream world... “Come, Link... Let us awaken... Together!” Link awoke to find himself adrift at sea. Looking up, he saw the form of a gigantic whale soaring through the sky. It was the Wind Fish. And together with it, a single seagull flew toward the horizon.

Summary

Link is the main playable character of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and is a descendant of the knights of Hyrule. Late one night he receives a telepathic message from Princess Zelda in his sleep, asking him to come to her aid and rescue her from the dungeons of the castle. When he awakes, Link goes against his uncles order to stay in the house and sneaks into the castle to save Zelda, however when he makes his way into one of the castles secret passages he finds his beloved uncle dying from wounds received from battle. Taking up the family sword and shield he's successful in rescuing the princess and is tasked with acquiring the Master Sword in order to combat the dark priest Agahnim and free the kingdom from his clutches. With the aid of Sahasrahla, the elder of Kakariko Village, Link is able to retrieve all three of the pendants needed to obtain the legendary blade and sets off to defeat Agahnim, only to arrive too late as the priest had banished Zelda into the Dark World and soon after sending Link to the same realm after an intense battle. Eventually saving Zelda and the other 6 maidens trapped within the Dark World, Link finally obtains the power he needs to strike down Agahnim, only to discover he was just an alterego of the demon king Ganon who retreats into his pyramid. After one final battle Link is able to defeat Ganon and recover the Triforce, wishing upon it to undo all the damage caused by Ganon.

After bringing peace to Hyrule, Link sets off to train in preparation for any threats that could potentially arise in the future. After honing his skills in distant countries, Link returns to Hyrule only to be caught within a storm and stranded on Koholint Island. After exploring the island to find a way to leave he learns that both he and the island are part of a dream created by the Wind Fish, and that the only way for Link to leave is to wake the ancient sky spirit, causing the annilation of the island and it's inhabitants in the process. Link eventually drives back and destroys the nightmares keeping the Wind Fish in an eternal slumber and awakens him, sending him back to the oceans in the real world with the remains of his ship.

Standard Equipment:

  • Fighter's Sword: A sword passed onto Link by his dying uncle. The sword possesses no special traits but is made well enough to clash with swords made for soldiers of the Hyrulian army.
  • Fighter's Shield & Fire Shield: A shield passed onto Link by his dying uncle. A very small shield that can block basic sword strikes and arrows. Eventually Link upgrades to the Fire Shield, a larger and sturdier shield that can even block fireballs, although he still carries the Fighter's Shield just in case he loses the Fire Shield.
  • Green Jerkin: The standard attire Link wears. A light weighted but sturdy set of mail that helps protect Link from some damage.
  • Pegasus Boots: A pair of special boots gifted to Link by Sahasrahla. These boots allow Link to spend a second charging up speed before dashing forwards.
  • Power Gloves: A pair of gloves Link loots from the Desert Palace. These greatly increase Link's physical strength, allowing him to list and toss objects that he couldn't even budge without them.
  • Zora's Flippers: A pair of flippers Link brought from King Zora. These flippers allow him to swim in deep water.
  • Moon Pearl: A mystical artifact Link loots from the Tower of Hera. This enchanted pearl protects Link from transmutation magic, allowing him to keep his true form in the Dark World which normally transforms all who enter the realm into a reflection of their heart.
  • Bow and Arrows: A longed ranged weapon Link loots from the Eastern Palace. Link can shoot distant opponents with this bow so long as he has a steady supply of arrows, of which he can carry up to 70 in his quiver.
  • Bombs: Powerful explosives Link often finds, loots, or buys throughout his journey. Link can place down a bomb that will explode within seconds of being placed, Link oftens picks up and throws them at the opponent if they're moving around too much to be hit by stationary bombs or at targets out of his reach. He can carry up to 50 at a time.
  • Boomerang & Magical Boomerang: A ranged weapon Link loots from the dungeons of Hyrule Castle. It always returns to Link after being thrown, while the boomerang doesn't deal much damage it's primary function is to stun Link's foes, who become completely immobilized should they get hit and it's even capable of negating the electrical properties of monsters like Buzz Blobs. Link later upgrades to the Magic Boomerang, which was enchanted by a Great Fairy to travel much further than the standard one.
  • Lamp: A simple lamp Link brings on his journey. In addition to providing light so that Link may see in the dark, the lamp can also fire a small ranged wave of fire at the cost of some magic energy, although the fire is very weak.
  • Bug-Catching Net: A net gifted to Link from a child in Kakariko Village. The net allows Link to catch insects such as bees and put them into a bottle (Should he have an empty one available), the net also somehow forces the captured insects to be Links ally as they'll instantly swarm and attack Link's opponents once released from the bottle.
  • Magic Powder: A bag of magical powder Link received from a witch in exchange for a special mushroom. At the cost of some magical energy Link can release a short ranged spray of powder that transmutes his opponents into something else, frequently into something harmless such as a weak slime or a fairy.
  • Ice Rod: A powerful magic wand that Link loots from a cave near Lake Hylia. At the cost of some magical energy Link can shoot a powerful blast of ice magic at his foe, instantly flash freezing anyone hit by the blast.
  • Magic Mirror: A special mirror gifted to Link by an old man that lives on Death Mountain. The mirror has 2 uses, the first being that it allows Link to teleport (He frequently uses this to warp to the entrance of a dungeon instead of traveling all the way back), the second and primary use is allowing Link to create portals that allow him to warp between dimensions.
  • Bottles: Bottles that Link loots, buys, or is gifted throughout his journey. Link carries 3 bottles with him that he fills with whatever he finds best for his current situation. He can fill them with Red Potions (Which fully restore his life energy), Green Potions (Which fully restore his magic energy), and Blue Potions (Which fully restores both his life and magic energy). He can also keep fairies within these bottles, which automatically revive him upon death (Although they don't full heal him like a red potion does), and insects like bees which he can then release to attack his opponents.

  • Master Sword: The legendary blade of evil's bane that Link obtains to defeat the wizard Agahnim, it allows him to shoot energy beams, dispel magical barriers, and repel attacks. After saving one of the blacksmiths from the Dark World, they upgrade the blade to the Tempered Master Sword, enhancing it's power even further.
  • Mirror Shield: An enormous shield Link loots from Turtle Rock. This shield is almost as large as Link's entire body, and is capable of blocking attacks that not even the Fire Shield can withstand including powerful laser beams.
  • Blue Mail: A special set of mail Link loots from the Ice Palace. Upon donning these clothes Link receives half the damage he'd normally take.
  • Titan's Mitt: A pair of powerful gauntlets Link loots from the Thieves' Town. These grant Link the strength to lift and hurl objects that not even the Power Gloves could handle.
  • Extra Bottle: With help from a reformed thief Link obtains an extra bottle from a chest, bringing the total number of bottles he carries with him up to 4.
  • Hookshot: A ranged device Link loots from the Swamp Palace. Link can fire a chained hook that upon latching onto something pulls Link directly to it or if it's light enough pull it to Link. The Hookshot also functions similarly to his Boomerang, leaving his opponents completely immobilized should they be struck by it and negating the electrical properties of monsters like Buzz Blobs.
  • Magic Hammer: A strong hammer Link loots from the Dark Palace. Despite it's name it possesses no magical properties, however the hammer does allow Link to strike the ground hard enough to flip over his foes, and powerful enough to crack apart things that not even the Master Sword can scratch.
  • Fire Rod: A powerful magic wand Link loots from Skull Woods. Using some magic energy Link can fire a powerful blast of fire, which quickly burns away anyone struck by the blast.
  • Ether Medallion: A magical medallion Link obtains on Death Mountain. Using some magic energy Link will summon and command cold winds that will instantly flash freeze anyone within his range.
  • Quake Medallion: A magical medallion gifted to Link by the Catfish living in the Dark World. Using some magic energy Link will thrust his blade into the ground, generating large bolts of electricity and causing an earthquake, the resulting tremors transmuting anyone in Links range much like the Magic Powder.
  • Bombos Medallion: A magical medallion Link obtains in the Desert of Mystery. Using some magic energy Link can generate extremely powerful explosions that often incinerates all those within Links range, including those who can withstand several blasts from the Fire Rod.
  • Magic Cape: An enchanted cape Link loots from a tomb in the Hyrulian Cemetery. Donning the cape allows Link to turn both invisible and intangible so long as he has the magical energy to use it.
  • Cane of Somaria: A magical cane Link loots from Misery Mire. Using some magic energy Link can conjure a solid block that can explode into energy bolts, or use it to create platforms he can ride on.
  • Cane of Byrna: A magical cane Link finds within the Dark Worlds version of Death Mountain. By using the cane Link can generate a ring of light around himself that acts as a barrier of some kind (So long as he has the magical energy to sustain it), preventing Link from taking any damage or even flinching from beings as powerful as Ganon, and the light also does minor damage to his foes as well.
  • Flute: A special flute Link digs up in the Haunted Grove. Playing the flute allows Link to summon a bird that will fly him to any destination he desires, the bird is even somehow able to travel across dimensions via unknown means should Link call upon it.

  • Golden Sword: The most powerful form of the Master Sword, obtained after Link has the blade blessed by the Cursed Fairy. In this enhanced state the blade deals far more damage then even the Tempered Master Sword.
  • Red Mail: A special set of mail Link loots from Ganon's Tower. This special mail reduces the damage Link takes by half of what the Blue Mail does, in total making Link receive only a quarter of the damage he'd normally receive.
  • Silver Arrows: Enchanted arrows Link obtains after having his bow blessed by the Cursed Fairy. In addition to the arrows dealing far more damage than normal ones, the Silver Arrows also possess the ability to directly attack the soul of whoever they strike.

  • Fighter's Sword & Koholint Sword: Link initially begins his quest with the sword given to him by his uncle but eventually upgrades it to the Koholint Sword, which is much more powerful and allows him to fire energy beams while in peak condition.
  • Hylian Shield & Mirror Shield: Link initially begins his quest with the Hylian Shield but eventually upgrades it to the Mirror Shield, which can block bigger and stronger attacks then the Hylian shield can and is even capable of reflecting ranged attacks, physical or magical, back at his attacker.
  • Blue Mail: After completing the trials within the Color Dungeon Link is awarded with one of two outfits. Out of the two outfits the Blue Mail focuses on defense, reducing the damage Link takes by half.
  • Red Mail: After completing the trials within the Color Dungeon Link is awarded with one of two outfits. Out of the two outfits the Red Mail focuses on power, allowing Link to deal twice as much damage then he normally would.
  • Pegasus Boots: A pair of special boots Link loots from Key Cavern. These boots allow Link to spend a second charging up speed before dashing forwards.
  • Flippers: A pair of flippers Link loots from Angler's Tunnel. These flippers allow him to swim in deep water.
  • Power Bracelet: An enchanted bracelet Link loots from Bottle Grotto. These greatly increase Link's physical strength, allowing him to list and toss objects that he couldn't even budge without them. Link eventually loots an even more potent version of the bracelet from the Face Shrine, which grants Link the strength to lift and hurl objects that the regular bracelet couldn't handle.
  • Roc's Feather: A special feather Link loots from Tail Cave. It allows link to perform acrobatic flips, jumping further than he normally can.
  • Bow and Arrows: A longed ranged weapon Link buys from the shop in Mabe Village. Link can shoot distant opponents with this bow so long as he has a steady supply of arrows, of which he can carry up to 60 in his quiver.
He can carry up to 60 at a time.
  • Bomb Arrows: By combining his bombs and arrows Link can shoot Bomb Arrows which explode upon impact.
  • Boomerang: A ranged weapon Link gets by trading with the secret Goriya. It always returns to Link after being thrown, the boomerang deals decent damage but it's primary function is to stun Link's foes, who become completely immobilized should they get hit and it's even capable of negating the electrical properties of monsters like Buzz Blobs.
  • Hookshot: A ranged device Link loots from the Catfish's Maw. Link can fire a chained hook that upon latching onto something pulls Link directly to it or if it's light enough pull it to Link. The Hookshot also functions similarly to his Boomerang, leaving his opponents completely immobilized should they be struck by it and negating the electrical properties of monsters like Buzz Blobs
  • Magic Rod: A powerful magic wand Link loots from Turtle Rock. It allows Link to shoot a powerful blast of fire, quickly burning away most of his foes.
  • Magic Powder: A bag of magical powder Link received from a Syrup the Witch in exchange for a special mushroom. It can transmute others and light Link's foes on fire, the bag can carry enough powder for Link to use it 40 times before depleting his supply.
  • Secret Medicine: A special medicine Link buys from Crazy Tracy. Link doesn't carry the medicine but rather has it rubbed on him before setting out to perform whatever task he has, it will automatically revive him from death, after which all traces of the medicine on his body fade away.
  • Fairy Bottles: Link obtains 3 special bottles during his quest. Unlike the bottles from his previous quest, these ones can only contain fairies. Also unlike his previous quest, fairies do not revive him from death, instead they simply heal Link once he lets them out of the bottle, after which they'll fly away.
  • Ocarina: A magical instrument Link loots from the Dream Shrine. The Ocarina allows Link to teleport when he plays Manbo's Mambo, and allows him to revive others when he plays the Frog's Song of Soul.

  • Pieces of Power: Special relics that Link sometimes finds randomly when defeating monsters. Upon picking one up Link's strength is temporarily doubled and his speed is slightly increased. However the effects can wear off sooner if he takes too much damage.
  • Guardian Acorns: Special relics that Link sometimes finds randomly when defeating monsters. Upon picking one up Link's defence is temporarily doubled. However the effects wear off quicker if he takes too much damage.

Intelligence: Gifted (Can make his way through complex and heavily guarded dungeons and solve the puzzles within them), Genius in combat (He is able to quickly master using a sword and various other weapons despite never using them prior, and could learn his family's secret sword technique within moments of being told how to do it[2], and through training gained the skill to sword fight as effectively in the air or underwater as he can on solid ground)

Weaknesses: Has a limited pool of magic to draw upon, and will be unable to use any of his magical items should his reserves run low and any magical items currently in use such as the Magic Cape or Cane of Bryna will automatically deactivate once his magic reserve is depleted[3] (However his magical items in Link's Awakening don't draw from his magic and items like the Magic Rod can be used as much as he pleases). The Ether, Quake, and Bombos Medallions can only have their magic channeled through the Master Sword, and Link will be unable to use any of the medallions should he be separated from the blade[3]. He can only fire energy beams from the Master Sword and Koholint Sword while he's in peak condition, and even the slightest bit[3] of damage will disable[9] his ability to do so. All his potions and fairies are one use only, and due to only carrying a small handful of bottles his options for healing, restoring his magic, and reviving himself are limited. Is incapable of swimming without the Zora Flippers[3]. The Secret Medicine wears off after reviving him once. The effects of Pieces of Power and Guardian Acorns are only temporary and will wear off quicker if he takes damage.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Spin Attack: After charging energy into his blade, Link does a 360 spin attack that deals greater damage than his normal sword strikes and, due to the energy surrounding it, has slightly more reach
  • Magic: Link possesses an innate ability to use magic, while he doesn't know how to cast spells by himself he can make use of various magical artifacts by channeling his own magic energy through them. However he can't cast spells endlessly and needs to make efficient use of his magical reserves (The only exception being the Magic Rod in Links Awakening, which doesn't deplete his magic at all). Each magical item he uses drains his magic to varying degree:
Magical Reserves:

  • Magic Powder: Each use of the Magic Powder drains 6.25% of his total magic reserves
  • Ice Rod: Each use of the Ice Rod drains 12.5% of his total magic reserves

After awakening a creature known as Mad Batter, Link has a spell cast on him that reduces the amount of magic power he needs to use his magical items by half[32]

  • Magic Powder: Each use of the Magic Powder drains 3.125% of his total magic reserves
  • Ice Rod: Each use of the Ice Rod drains 6.25% of his total magic reserves
