The Known Enemies of Kingdom Hearts

From left to right, top to bottom: Heartless, Nobody, Unversed, Dream Eater (Spirit) and Dream Eater (Nightmare).

So after seeing Weekly Battles' blog on the Gems of Steven Universe, and thinking it over and realizing it wouldn't work for profiles, I decided to make this blog to describe the abilities of the four enemy species in the Square Enix action RPG series, Kingdom Hearts. The Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed and Dream Eaters.

Introduction[]

Starting with the lead antagonist enemies in the series, the Heartless are beings of darkness made manifest when the heart of a living being falls into darkness (Their own strength being proportional to the darkness in the individual's heart), and become devoid of emotion and higher intellect, only possessing a desire to collect hearts. While their direct origin is unknown, it can be assumed they were first birthed during the ancient Keyblade War, when darkness itself first arose in the hearts of men. When a Heartless is slain, unless it was with a Keyblade, the heart within them will turn into another Heartless in due time (Giving all Heartless Low-Godly Regeneration). Those with an affinity for darkness, such as Maleficent, are capable of commanding the Heartless, but run the risk of losing their own hearts if they ever show weakness. Additionally, the Heartless will always exist as long as the concept of darkness itself exists (Which is basically impossible to get rid of in the Kingdom Hearts universe, as it's directly tied to light, and the erasure of one would mean the end of all existence), which also gives each Heartless Type 8 Immortality.

As for various assorted abilities, we have partial Intangibility (With Shadows and their kin, who can meld into the environment to avoid direct attacks), Possession (With the Possessor kin and Shadow Stalker, albeit it only seems to work on inanimate objects, which they turn into dangerous creatures, but the Hover Ghost/Carrier Ghost/Living Pod can possess living things), Invisibility (With the Sealth Soldier, Dark Thorn, Stealth Sneak, Sneak Army, Veil Lizard and Lurk Lizard), near-complete Non-Corporeality (With the Phantom, which is stated to lack a physical form), Power Nullification (With Kurt Zisa, who can negate his opponent's magic), miscellaneous forms of Status Effect Inducement (Such as the Striped Aria drastically reducing their opponent's durability, the Black Fungus or Pink Concerto inflicting poison), Durability Negation (With the Guardian, whose Nil-based attacks bypass all defense)

When a Heartless is created, the body it leaves behind takes the form of a Nobody, generally monochromatic in color (Though exceptionally strong-willed can maintain human form). While also technically emotionless like their Heartless brethren, they can still give off a facade of emotions based on the memories of their original life. When the Heartless and Nobody of an individual are slain, the original being comes back. Due to the fact that they lack hearts, Nobodies are shunned by both light and darkness, and therefore don't truly "exist". Make of that what you will.

For the various abilities our monocrome friends possess, we have Spatial Manipulation (With the Snipers, who primarily use it for movement), Gravity Manipulation (Also the Snipers, mostly used to seemigly stand on thin air) and Transmutation (For the Gamblers, who are able to transform Sora into a card or die, should he fail their minigames).

Unversed are a species entirely unrelated to Heartless and Nobodies, considered the "opposite of human life" and are born from Vanitas' negative emotions (Albeit the Cursed Coach and the Symphony Master were created by Cinderella's stepfamily). When an Unversed is slain, their essence returns to Vanitas, which allows him to create more Unversed from his own negativity.

In terms of abilities, they have the likes of Poison Manipulation (For Vial Phials), Time Manipulation (For Chrono Twisters, mainly in the form of time stop) and the ability to replicate their opponents near perfectly (For the Mimic Master).

Finally the newest enemy species in Kingdom Hearts, the Dream Eaters are darkness manifested in the Realm of Sleep, a place walled off from even the Heartless from entering. The two sub-types of Dream Eaters are Spirits and Nightmares, the former consuming nightmares to give the person good dreams, and the latter consuming good dreams to give the person nightmares, giving them all a form of Dream Manipulation.

Natural Resistances[]

As can be attributed to their physiologies, the various enemy forces have resistances to various different abilities. This is inclusive of:

  • Age Manipulation: Heartless, Unversed and Dream Eaters all lack natural bodies and age processes, and thus cannot have their ages altered. Nobodies are an exception as they do appear to physically age (Most notably with Zexion, who goes from a child in post-Birth by Sleep to a teenager in Chain of Memories).
  • Biological Manipulation: Because of their non-organic natures, there are no biological aspects that can be controlled with any enemy species in Kingdom Hearts.
  • Blood Manipulation: As an extension of the above, the enemy species in Kingdom Hearts are devoid of blood to be manipulated.
  • Bone Manipulation: Due to being made of darkness, nothingness or negative emotions, Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed and Dream Eaters don't have bones to control.
  • Empathic Manipulation: Heartless and Nobodies are completely devoid of, and cannot feel, emotions, and thus cannot be susceptible to Empathic Manipulation.
  • Pressure Point Attacks: Given their unusual physical makeup, the enemy species all lack the pressure points of ordinary beings.
  • Soul Manipulation: As the heart is synonymous with the soul in Kingdom Hearts, and Nobodies, Unversed and Dream Eaters do not possess them, they cannot be affected by soul manipulation.

There are also certain powers that would not truly kill them, but would still be able to harm them.

  • Acid Manipulation: While acid could be powerful enough to melt their physical forms, a Heartless' heart will merely turn into another Heartless after a period of time unless they are slain with a Keyblade.
  • Petrification: Much like above, their regeneration would save them in the long term, but it would incapacitate them for a while by forcing them to regenerate.
  • Poison Manipulation: Given their lack of biological structures, any poisons relating to biology wouldn't work on any of the species, but mystical poisons (Such as the Poison status ailment) would work.
