Ostriches are known as the fastest and largest birds on earth, weighing in at 145 kilograms, reaching up to 2.7 meters tall, and possessing powerful legs allowing them to run at speeds of up to 43 mph (around 20 m/s). Also coming naturally from being so big, their eyes can reach 2 inches in diameter and their eggs weigh 12 times as much as chicken eggs.
One very common misconception is that ostriches bury their heads in the dirt when they feel threatened. This is not true; Ostriches sometimes lay their heads down on the ground and can blend in with the dirt. Instead, their first option is usually to run, and they only resort to confronting the threat physically when they feel cornered.
