~ Nightwolf's battle cry |
Summary
Every generation, the Great Spirit chooses a worthy warrior to become Nightwolf: the Matoka’s champion and protector. Grey Cloud proved worthy when he laid down his life to prevent the Black Dragon from plundering what remained of his tribe’s sacred artifacts. As Nightwolf, Grey Cloud possesses extraordinary magic granted by the Great Spirit. He uses it not only to fight for the Matoka’s future, but also to defend all of Earthrealm.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:
Martial Arts:
- Tomahawk: A single handed axe of Native American origins. Nightwolf only carries one tomahawk that hangs from the hooks on his belt, but he can summon the second one out of thin air. Besides being an excellent striking weapon, it can also be thrown at enemies and even incoming projectiles to intercept them mid-flight.
- Gunstock War Club: A wood club shaped like the stock of a musket that bears a spear shaped blade on the elbow of the club, facing away from the "gunstock" shaped end. Just like his tomahawk, it is a also a striking weapon except that it's a blunt weapon rather than a bladed weapon. The spike on the club can also be used as a piercing tool, making it a good hybrid weapon.
Great Spirit's Magic: First introduced in MK11, this mysterious and divine being is the source of Nightwolf's powers after proving himself worthy of the mantle. He possesses the same emerald glow that various other kombatants use in battle, from heroes such as Johnny Cage and Jade to villains like Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung.
With this magic, he gains a wide access to various abilities that are well suited for kombat.
- Amplification: Nightwolf uses the same green glow that boosts the attacks of his fellow kombatants. Just like them, this energy boosts his speed (usually his movement speed) and attack strength.
- Weapon Creation: Nightwolf only brings a few of his trusty weapons with him in battle. The rest of his arsenal is created on the field using his magic by instantly conjuring various energy weapons into both of his hands. Such weapons include bows & arrows, daggers, and axes.
- Shield Creation: Nightwolf's shields come in two forms, one that envelops his entire body and another shield that he summons in front of him that covers his entire front and a small area above him. Shields that cover his body can be used to block and reflect incoming projectiles, while his circular shields can block AoE attacks from the front.
- Telekinesis: His telekinesis is only limited to recalling his own weapons. Despite this limitation, it is still a decent usage of the ability, as he can turn his weapons into makeshift traps by planting them on the ground before pulling them back. The weapons will then hit anyone on the way back as he retrieves it for his next attack.
It's quite difficult to determine whether his bluish light powers and his lightning powers are the same magic due to both of them possessing a similar appearance in MK11, but they will be grouped here for the sake of convenience.
- Lightning: The element of lightning is a common motif and symbol among the Native Americans, so it is only fitting for him to manipulate its torrid power. With it, he can summon a small storm cloud that'll scorch opponents with white-hot lightning bolts. This power is later expanded on in later series where he can use lightning in different ways: shooting it from his hands, conducting it towards his weapons and projectiles, charging his weapons with it, etc.
- In MK11, his lightning can cause a combustion of strange blue flames. Its true effects are not yet known, but one can assume that it burns anyone and anything like normal fire.
- Light: A mysterious and unexplored part of Nightwolf's magic arsenal. He may only use this power to great effect against overwhelmingly powerful foes as a last resort, sometimes sacrificing himself in the process. Reciting an incantation in a language similar to Lakota, Nightwolf can summon a pillar of light that shines upon his opponent (and even himself if he happens to be caught under it) until they're fully disintegrated with no visible remains left of them.
Animal Spirits: Nightwolf's connection with the spirits gives him an affinity with three spiritual beasts that can aid him in battle. They are named Kiba, Komo, and Hana. Respectively, they are the Wolf spirit, the Bear spirit, and the Eagle spirit. Despite their spiritual nature, they can interact with corporeal beings just fine.
- Kiba: Kiba is the wolf spirit of Nightwolf. When summoning this spirit, it will grant him a damage buff.
- Komo: Komo is the ursine spirit of Nightwolf. When summoning this spirit, it will grant him a buff that'll reduce damage taken.
- Outside of defensive buffs, this spirit can be summoned to maul his opponents. Komo's size can also be increased to the point where it towers over the largest bears known to man.
- Hana: Hana is the eagle spirit of Nightwolf. When summoning this spirit, it will boost up the speed and the distance of Rhino Charge.
- Outside of ability buffs, this spirit can be summoned to attack his opponents. In gameplay, this will prevent the usage of the opponent's Offensive and Defensive meters, preventing them from enhancing their attacks.
After sacrificing himself with his power to destroy Sindel during Outworld's invasion on Earthrealm, the soul of Nightwolf was taken by the sorcerer Quan Chi and was subsequently turned into a revenant: an evil and undead version of a person whose thoughts are still their own, but they will only serve the Brotherhood of Shadow's leaders: Shinnok and Quan Chi. They resemble their human form and still retain their powers, but their skin is pale or grey and there are cracks on it that glow with a yellow or reddish glow.
- Revenants do not appear to age. Even after 25+ years, they still resemble their younger selves on the day they were killed.
- As seen in Aftermath, their inner physiology is also affected. Just like a rotten corpse, their inner flesh is discolored and the internal organs are withered and inactive, indicating the lack of blood and its flow in their bodies.
- Blade And Edge (MK11): He can also use his club at the end of the combo, slamming it over their head.
- Helmsplitter: The second gut punch is replaced with him tackling the opponent down before he slams his axe on their head.
- Bull And Bear: The final hit is replaced with a front kick.
- Razor's Edge: The sweep is replaced with a grab where he holds up the opponent's leg, stabs a knife into it, and pulls it back to force them down. He stabs them in the chest four times before he rolls away.
- Nightwolf can add a second hit where he leaps up to swing his axe down.
- He can also rapidly fire three arrows straight at the opponent or fire all three at once.
- Moonlight Reflector: Nightwolf teleports behind the opponent while using Reflector.
- He can increase the move's damage by slicing their guts twice before the last hit.
- He can add a second attack where he calls down a lightning bolt on them.
- Recall Axe: Nightwolf retrieves his axe with telekinesis. It will hit opponent's on the way back.
- Quick Recall Axe: Nightwolf teleports his axe back into his hand.
- He can delay the attack, keeping him in an aiming stance. He may also cancel the move before firing.
