Karl Mordo came to the Kamar-Taj to become one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts in order to avenge a tragedy in his life. Mordo was initially arrogant and disrespectful to others, but he eventually humbled and set aside his thirst for revenge. He was noted for being rigid and unwilling to compromise his beliefs of the natural order that he gained. Mordo became a Master and assisted the Ancient One in recruiting and training others in the ways of magic. After Kaecilius's corruption, Mordo convinced the Ancient One to train Stephen Strange in the ways of the mystic arts, believing that Strange had great potential and could prove useful in stopping Kaecilius. When Strange later accused the Ancient One of drawing power from the Dark Dimension, a technique that was forbidden, Mordo became furious at Strange. However, Mordo would soon learn that Strange's suspicions were correct, which would lead Mordo to become deeply disillusioned about the Ancient One's cause, though he still assisted Strange in stopping Kaecilius in Hong Kong. After Strange broke the laws of nature using the Eye of Agamotto to save the world from Dormammu, Mordo became further disillusioned and left the Masters of the Mystic Arts, believing that irresponsible sorcerers abusing their power were causing too many problems. ordo would then dedicate himself to ridding the world of rogue sorcerers.
