Note: This profile contains major spoilers for the game Pony Island. Continue at your own risk.
The mysterious entity known only as Hopeless Soul acts as your guide out of purgatory. After the first time Theodore crashes Pony Island, Hopeless Soul will send him a message, offering him a chance to escape. Throughout the game, the lost soul will help Theodore by opening portals in the coding, fending off Satan, and granting access to core files as the two wayward spirits slowly but surely destroy Pony Island for good, working towards their freedom. After all three core files have been deleted and before the system dump is initiated, the Hopeless Soul will provide Theodore and all the other souls trapped in limbo with pony vessels in order to escape and finally earn their freedom. However, Hopeless Soul does not join Theodore, and instead merely tells him they'll meet again when all is said and done.
After the souls have escaped, Hopeless Soul will reappear, addressing the player directly and telling them that he is the only one remaining trapped, imprisoned by the game itself. He then urges the player to make the right choice and delete Pony Island from their hard drive, saving his soul. If the player ignores this and instead chooses to reenter the game, questing for all 24 hidden tickets, Hopeless Soul will again confront them after all of them have been found. Shocked that the player cared so little for him and instead chose to find all the collectibles while knowing full well he was trapped and suffering, Hopeless Soul states that he now understands the player and that they want a truly complete, final ending. The soul will then proceed to engage the player in combat, altering the world around them as he becomes a final boss simply for their enjoyment and sense of completion. Once all three stages have been defeated, Hopeless Soul will state there's nothing else to do before telling the player they can now close the game, since nothing else will happen.
Digging through the game's files and searching for subtle clues within the story will reveal that the Hopeless Soul and Lucifer are actually one and the same. Hidden hints will state that the Devil often speaks in different voices, using the guise of the Hopeless Soul to play out the role of both the good guy and the bad guy. He will also urge Theodore to not "tell dad", implying he still cares about God's opinion and would be embarrassed should his father find out about this, if he wasn't aware, already. Hopeless Soul also seems to embody much of Lucifer's self-loathing, making comments on how poorly programmed Pony Island is, whereas the Devil will often become frustrated should Theodore attempt to "fix" his game, viewing it as him being unappreciative of his work. This also explains why Hopeless Soul remains trapped as long as Pony Island remains on the player's hard drive, as Lucifer is the one soul who is unable to escape his prison.
