Summary
Yuki Yuna is a Hero is an anime series directed by Seiji Kishi in the Fall season of 2014. Alongside it, a prequel novel written by Takahiro and illustrated by BUNBUN was being released: Washio Sumi is a Hero. Since then, the franchise has expanded largely, as it has gotten visual novels, an action game, a prequel novel called Nogi Wakaba is a Hero about the origin of the world's apocalypse, a chapter about the first ever Hero, a smartphone game, a movie trilogy of Washio Sumi, two other anime seasons (Hero Chapter and Great Mankai Chapter), a parallel novel about failed Heroes, manga adaptations of all main entries, supplementary chapters, two spin-off manga, and an anthology series.
Plot
Yuki Yuna is a Hero (or YuYuYu) takes place on the Japanese island of Shikoku in the fictional city of Sanshu, based on the real-life city of Kan'onji in Kagawa Prefecture, in the Year 300 of the Divine Era. Yuna, Mimori, Fu, and Itsuki are all members of the Sanshu Middle School Hero Club, dedicating themselves to helping those that request help (later joined by Karin). One day in their regular daily lives, the Hero Club members are suddenly caught in an explosion of light and transported to a strange forest, where they encounter mysterious monsters known as Vertex which seek to destroy the Shinju ("Divine Tree"), the guardian deity which protects and blesses humanity. Using a special phone application granted by Taisha, an organization dedicated to the Shinju, Yuna and her friends must transform into "Heroes" with magical powers to protect their world from imminent destruction.
Washio Sumi is a Hero (or WaSuYu) takes place 2 years prior to YuYuYu, in Year 298 of the Divine Era, and details the events that lead to the Hero System used in the latter. It also serves as an origin story for the character Mimori Togo, as well as the mysterious paralyzed girl, Sonoko Nogi.
Nogi Wakaba is a Hero (or NoWaYu) is a prequel story taking place between 2015 and 2019, following the invasion of Earth by invasive monsters sent by the anti-humanity Gods, the Heavenly Gods, to destroy humanity. In response, the pro-humanity Gods fuse and turn into Shinju, and fight back by granting powers to a select few young girls, called Heroes. The events follow the first-ever Hero team in their desperate efforts to protect the remnants of humanity, with 2019 marking the end of the Anno Domini/Christian Era and the start of the Divine Era at Year-0 and Year-1. A bonus chapter called Shiratori Utano is a Hero (or ShiUYu) depicts the life of the first-ever singular Hero.
Kusunoki Mebuki is a Hero (or KuMeYu) is a parallel story that begins before YuYuYu and ends alongside Great Mankai Chapter. It follows a group of girls who failed to become Heroes and who, after the events of YuYuYu, become Sentinels, a strike team whose missions are to progressively expand the Shinju's territory against the Heavenly Gods and to support the Heroes.
Power of the Verse
The Yushaverse is a verse whose characters and monsters' power are designed to surpass the absolute best of what humanity can achieve. The Heroes in their base forms reach between City level and High Mountain level depending on the group, and between Mountain level and Moon level in their stronger forms. Their reactions are in the Hypersonic+ range, and they can move at Subsonic speeds themselves.
While the verse is rather haxless, the Year-300 Heroes (like Yuna Yuki) are practically immortal and invulnerable to damage due to their fairies, while the Year-0 Heroes can drastically amplify their stats via the use of Trump Cards. Most notably, Chikage Koori has Type 8 Immortality and Low-Godly Regeneration with her Trump Card, but only for a limited time and with nefarious side-effects. The Year-300 Heroes can become even more powerful when in Mankai form, being able to destroy objects or deflect attacks comparable to moons. The Vertex, creatures created by the Heavenly Gods that oppose humanity, can casually shrug off nukes in their weakest form, and reach Mountain level and High Mountain level in their Perfect forms. The strongest being of the verse, Shinju, possesses most of the verse's hax to itself, like Time Stop, Precognition and Existence Erasure.
