Summary
Nariyoshi Kesuke Miyagi, better known as Mr. Miyagi is an Okinawan martial arts master who fled to America to avoid a fight to the death challenged by his former best friend. In the states, Miyagi's placed in a Manzanar Japanese internment camp. He later joined the U.S. army in WWII, even receiving a Medal of Honor for his service.
However, while he was away at war, his wife and son died in the camp due to complications with childbirth. This tragedy made him isolate himself from society and turn to alcohol to drown his sorrows. His life changes when he defends a high school student named Daniel from being beaten to near death by a gang of bullies. After that night, he reluctantly accepts the kid as a karate student, with their relationship helping him cope with the loss he's suffered for decades.

Later doing the same when Daniel's leg is injured by a kick to reduce said injury. Can make medicine that can heal injured bruises. which Daniel used throughout the movie to deal with his visual bruises)
- Pressure Points (Though he does not use the deadly aspect of Miyagi-Do, in situations he has to, he "Takes away the ability to wage war" by striking in spots that temporarily immobilize which can last for a short amount of time)
- Enhanced Senses (Should have learned the exercises Julie Pierce executed that allowed her to open up her senses to fight while blind)

Attack Potency: At least Street level (Mr. Miyagi is one of two of the strongest characters in the Miyagi-Verse. WOG states that Mr. Miyagi and Kim Sun-Yung in brawns are much higher than anyone else.[1] Making him far superior to Post-Timeskip Chozen. Easily took down Pre-Timeskip Chozen, who kicked off a piece of a stone statue. Quickly defeated Pre-Timeskip Kreese, a feat that took Post-Timeskip Johnny much longer to his weaker Post-Timeskip Kreese counterpart. Toyed with Pre-Timeskip Terry Silver and threw him hard enough to shatter a glass panel. Chopped a large wooden support beam holding a small house up.[2] He should be superior to Pre-Timeskip Daniel, who can break in half 6-foot slabs with his bare hands in a single strike)
Speed: Athletic Human, Peak Human combat speed with Superhuman attack speed and reactions (Can land strikes and easily keep up with John Kreese, Terry Silver, Chozen, and Pre-Timeskip Johnny. Comparable if not superior to Julie Pierce who leaped and curled up mid-air simultaneously while a speeding car was coming at her point-blank. Comparable to Pre-Timeskip Daniel who can catch a fly, with Mr. Miyagi doing the same later on), possible Subsonic reactions speeds (Caught a flying arrow from a highly skilled archer)
Lifting Strength: Peak Human (Should be comparable to Pre-Timeskip Kreese. Threw Mike Barnes up into the air, back into a dojo with no effort. Can easily direct Terry Silver's punch and toss him into a wall. Can restrain Mike Barnes' attacks and toss him to the side with little effort. Effortlessly broke a spear in half. Effortlessly broke Dugan's grip and pushed him several meters back)
Striking Strength: At least Street level (Knocked down Pre-Timeskip Chozen in a single kick. Incapacitated Pre-Timeskip Kreese quickly with multiple critical strikes; something that took a Post-Timeskip Johnny numerous hits to a weaker Post-Timeskip Kreese. Dispatched of multiple 1984 Cobra Kai associates, specifically Pre-Time Skip Bobby, Johnny, and Tommy; injurying them in few strikes. In contrast to Pre-Timeskip Kreese, who only merely knocked them down)
Durability: At least Street level (Should be able to take his own strikes. Stood his ground by a full-power hit directly to the back by Chozen while he was using the back of a wooden stick)

Remained a great and effective mentor throughout the series who planted lessons that Daniel would use during Karate Kid and later in Cobra Kai. Shows expertise in medicine that can help heal Daniels bruises. Expert in the use of pressure points, knowing which parts of the body he can target. Has advanced knowledge and experience on gardening. Has demonstrated a large set of knowledge on philosophy. He was a highly exceptional soldier in the 442nd Infantry Regiment who taught his commanding officer karate. Under his tutelage, Daniel wins the Under 18 All-Valley Karate Championship after only training for less than two months. Portrayed as the wisest character in the entire series
Mr. Miyagi stands as one of two of the best martial artists in the Miyagi-Verse. This would include Post-Timeskip Chozen who was able to easily best six martial arts simultaneously. His Miyagi-Do disciples whom were skilled enough to be recognized to the world stage martial arts competition. This would include far upscaling from John Kreese who is a military two-time karate champion. Mikes Barnes whom Miyagi easily bested in a single technique, when he was a young male feared national champion for martial arts in the USA. In addition to his fights, Mr. Miyagi shows his versatility to fight multiple opponents at once with ease, beating five Cobra Kai students, including Pre-Timeskip Johnny. He was able to casually beat up five grown men on one occasion casually. Then take down Chozen Toguchi along with two associates effortlessly
Standard Tactics: His primary fighting style is reading his opponent's style, waiting for an opponent to attack, and avoiding attacks. Then uses their or his movement to counter theirs with a perfect position; he does this on defense and uses his offence to strike them with little effort but with powerful precision. He utilizes his vital standard strikes to incapacitate the opponent and utilize throws. In matchups with intent to kill he will utilize his offensive style, which is a style that uses more foul-efficient strikes against opponents to hinder them quicker with more brutal striking methods. His final technique is a strike to the head with powerful precision when they are defenseless and on their knees to kill
Weaknesses: Human limitations. Mr. Miyagi is an extremely merciful pacifist, always sparing his opponents and willing to escape his home country to avoid conflict. He toys around with fighters if he sees it as convenient like Terry Sliver when he attempted to goat Mr. Miyagi into showing him all he has

Video Games
Notable Attacks/Techniques:
- Miyagi-Do Kata: The foundation of Miyagi-Do Karate. This Kata, is based around the workings of the Bonsai Tree. You start with your fists pointing down to the ground, your roots. Then you move your arms up to your chest and push them outwards, while opening your hands. The palms facing upwards as you do. Representing the branches growing and the leaves blooming. Then you raise your right hand up to your forehead with your left hand pointing downwards. Your body turning and facing right as you do so. Then alternate positions, switching your hands and your stance so you're facing left. Representing the tree growing up and the limbs waving in the wind. Then repeat the pattern until it becomes a natural flow to you.
- Wax On, Wax Off: This technique refers to a drill Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel in order to master blocking. This particular block (often referred to as the Chudan Uke in Karate) is performed in a circular motion, preventing oncoming attacks towards a fighter from hitting the person's face or body.
- Paint The House: Another nickname given to the Karate block Kakuto Uke, whereby sticking one's wrist out and striking the arms in an upward motion, they block attacks in a similar motion to stroking a paintbrush up and down.
- Sand The Floor: A downward block which involves swinging the hands below one's waist, moving them like one would if they were sanding a floor. Unlike Wax On, Wax Off and Paint The House, which are meant to intercept punches aimed at the face and body, Sand The Floor is for blocking kicks towards the legs, groin, and body.
- Honk: A psyche out technique Mr. Miyagi often uses after beating an opponent. He first pretends that it'll be the finishing blow that ends the opponent's life, but instead follows with a playful tap on the nose. Despite not causing any physical harm, the intimidation factor of it has caused numerous fighters to lose their will to fight and even faint.
- Drum Technique: A form of dodging where the martial artist rotates their body from side to side, much like how a Japanese pellet drum is played.
- Crane Kick: A variation of a jumping front kick where one stands on a single foot and raises their arms up spread outward (resembling a position a crane bird would make) The fighter then jumps off the foot they are standing on and kicks with the other. This is Mr. Miyagi's ultimate technique and is extremely difficult to dodge or block when executed correctly.
- Shutō Uchi
- Miyagi-Do Pressure Point Attacks: A highly dangerous technique in which one strikes vulnerable nerves on a person's nerves, temporarily paralyzing their limbs. Being a pacifist, Miyagi doesn't use this technique during fights and refused to teach it to Daniel.
Explanations
A true martial arts master, Miyagi possesses extraordinary skill. Primarily a counter-fighter, his ability to read an opponent's intentions is exceptional. He often waits for his opponent to attack, then dodges with one quick, economical motion that positions him perfectly for a counter. Miyagi never wastes movement; whether on offense or defense his techniques achieve maximum results with minimum effort. Aside from the standard strikes his Miyagi-Do Karate also incorporates an arsenal of throws and joint manipulation techniques. Miyagi's karate training has also allowed him to achieve practically superhuman feats of strength, such as splitting a giant wooden beam in half and catching an incoming arrow with his bare hand.
Due to his age and small size Miyagi's opponents constantly underestimate him, and he uses this to his advantage. Miyagi often uses his opponents' body weight and offense against them, and the core of his karate is defensive-minded. It takes a lot of balance and technique to do this properly, but in Miyagi's hands this style is much more effective than any aggressive one. Daniel also seems to be at his best when he follows his mentor's example; he defeats the aggressive and physically dominant Mike Barnes with a powerful counterattack after switching to a superior guard position taken from Miyagi's kata.
As opposed to Cobra Kai, that's all about striking first and offense, Mr. Miyagi spends most of his fights defending himself, and only displaying offense when it's necessary.
In the second film, Mr. Miyagi explains that he is descended from Shimpo Miyagi, who was very fond of both fishing and sake. One day in 1625 while fishing and very drunk, he passed out on his fishing boat off the coast of Okinawa and ended up on the coast of China. Ten years later, Shimpo returned to Okinawa with a wife, two children, and the secret of Miyagi family karate.
With the exception of Chozen (who hit Mr. Miyagi while his back was turned), no opponent in the entire Karate Kid series has ever successfully landed a strike on Mr. Miyagi. Daniel later reveals to his son that the only time he saw someone land a hit on Mr. Miyagi was when Anthony kicked him in the face as a baby, something that had greatly amused the man.
During the storm in The Karate Kid Part II, Mr. Miyagi uses a shutō uchi technique to snap a wooden beam similarly thick but much longer and heavier than the plank Sato was unable to dent with multiple strikes, heavily implying that Mr. Miyagi would have won were they to fight.
In The Karate Kid Part III, Mr. Miyagi defeated Mike Barnes in 3 seconds, John Kreese in 12 seconds, and Terry Silver in 32 seconds. When fighting Kreese, he fought aggressively on offense, but did not strike first. When fighting Silver, however, he mostly fought defensively, and occasionally displayed well timed offense.
As revealed by Chozen in Cobra Kai, Mr. Miyagi also knew a deadlier aspect of karate involving disabling an opponent using pressure points in preparation to potentially kill them as a form of self-defense. Mr. Miyagi never displayed this aspect nor did he teach it to Daniel who was unaware of it before Chozen demonstrated and taught it to Daniel as Mr. Miyagi felt that Daniel did not need to be taught that aspect.
Miyagi can be considered one of the greatest fighters in the franchise. The only person comparable to Miyagi is Kim Sun-Yung.
