Standard Equipment:

  • Bow and Arrow: The bow and arrow is a projectile weapon that predates recorded history and is common to most cultures.
    • Regular arrow
    • Explosive arrow
    • Incendiary arrow
  • Knife: A knife can take innumerable forms, but always consists of a sharp blade with a handle. The length of the blade can vary but is typically shorter than a sword blade. Depending on the design, a knife can be used as a weapon, a piece of silverware, or a tool (sometimes more than one).
  • Snare: A snare is a rope or wire that is tied to an object to trap prey and kill it.
  • Gun: A gun is a firearm designed to be used by an individual. Peeta, Gale, and Katniss were all trained in using firearms and were members of Squad 451, which was composed of skilled marksmen. The rebels also use machine guns.
  • Machete: A machete is a type of heavy, long-bladed knife which can be used as an agricultural tool and as a weapon.

  • Backpack: A backpack is a bag designed to be carried on one's back. In the Hunger Games Arena, backpacks are typically found at the Cornucopia and can contain supplies for tributes. The exact contents of each backpack vary widely, and may contain anything from food and water to all manner of survival gear. Her backpack contains one thin black sleeping bag that reflects body heat, a pack of crackers, a pack of dried beef strips, a bottle of iodine, a box of wooden matches, a bit of coiled wire, night vision glasses, and an empty black water bottle.
    • Night-vision glasses: These glasses enable the wearer to see in complete darkness, and pick out details that the naked eye would normally have difficulty seeing.
    • Rope/Cord: Rope is composed of woven fibers (exact materials can vary widely) formed into long strand.
    • Sleeping bag: A sleeping bag is a piece of gear used for sleeping. There are usually three layers that make up the sleeping bag. The outside layer is usually water proof or water resistant, to protect the sleeper from nighttime dew. The middle layer is warm. It keeps the sleeper warm and keeps body heat from escaping. The last layer is in the inside of the sleeping bag. It is usually made of soft material that feels good against the skin (often made of sheet material). A zipper usually runs all the way along one side of the sleeping bag.
    • Water container: Water is critical to survival in the Hunger Games arena, and containers of water - or at least things to carry water in - are often found at the Cornucopia.
    • Wire: Wire is a very thin, flexible strand of metal, often stored in a coil or spool.
  • Arena wear: The clothing worn by tributes during their time in the arena.
    • Belt: In the 74th Hunger Games, the trousers of the Arena Wear were secured by a "sturdy brown belt", and Katniss used this belt as one of her vital tools in the competition, namely to tie herself to tree branches while sleeping. Without this extra security, she could have fallen to the ground and probably would have been killed by the Career pack. For the 75th Hunger Games, the Arena Wear included a wide belt covered in purple plastic. Although not explained in any way, the tributes discovered (some more quickly than others) that the belt was a flotation device.
  • Mockingjay Uniform: The final outfit that Cinna designed was Katniss' mockingjay uniform, which she wore throughout the Second Rebellion. In keeping with Katniss' role as "the Mockingjay" (a living symbol of defiance against the Capitol), the uniform was black in color, except for white patches on the underside of the sleeves, mimicking the pattern on actual Mockingjay's wings.
    • Body armor: The special mockingjay outfit incorporated a breastplate, multiple layers of body armor within the garment itself, and a helmet made of interwoven metal mesh that could be drawn back like a hood. This protected her when she was shot in District 2, although the bullet bruised her ribs and ruptured her spleen.
  • Fishing gear: On the morning of reaping day (74th Hunger Games), Katniss and Gale meet up in the woods and left their fishing poles dangling into the lake while they gathered wild greens. While the specific design of the poles wasn't mentioned, they were able to catch a dozen fish before the morning ended. Making fish hooks was one of the training stations offered during the 75th Hunger Games.
  • Game bag: Katniss and Gale often carried bags or sacks while hunting in the woods, usually to make transporting hunted game or gathered plants easier.
  • Marvel's backpack: Contains several knives, two extra spearheads, a flashlight, a small leather pouch, a first aid kit, a bottle of water, and a pack of dried fruit.
  • Awl: An awl is a tool that looks almost like a screwdriver, but with a needle-like point at the end of the blade. It is typically used for piercing holes in materials like wood or leather, but it can also be used as a weapon, usually in close combat.
  • Spile: A spile is a type of peg that can be inserted into a tree to drain the sap.

Optional Equipment:
  • Holo: A holo is a device used by the rebels to display Plutarch Heavensbee's holograph, that showed locations of known pods hidden in the Capitol streets. They are able to zoom in on the streets and see which pods are nearby.

Intelligence: Average normally (Katniss received District 12's formal education, though it's unclear what their curriculum contained), Above Average in medicine and herbology (Katniss's mother is the daughter of an apothecary and taught Katniss and her sister Prim some skills she learned from them), Gifted in hunting (Katniss is skilled enough in archery, trapping, and stealth to provide for herself and her mother and sister through poaching while they lived in poverty and lacked a breadwinner after her father died)

Standard Tactics: Often, she will react first and ask questions later. She will do anything to survive.

Weaknesses: Standard human weaknesses, stubborn and impulsive, emotionally fragile and suffers from borderline personality disorder and PTSD, underestimates younger opponents

Explanations

Katniss Hunting

Katniss hunting in the District 12 Woods.

Katniss is a highly skilled archer and hunter, which she learned from her father. After meeting Gale, she added fishing and trapping to her skills. This is shown when she was making snares in the Training Center, watching the training of the career tributes including Cato using sword, Glimmer using Bow and Arrows, and Marvel using and throwing spears.

She also had to educate herself on the edible, medicinal, and poisonous plant life of District 12. Hunting and gathering on a daily basis has given her a highly skilled sense of woodcraft.

In pre-judging, she scored the highest mark out of all tributes which was an 11. In the second movie, she demonstrated exceptional lethality during her combat simulation, which all the other tributes watched in awe. She did not use her bow, however, during the judging process; instead, she made a fake dummy which was hung by neck which on the chest was written "Seneca Crane." Seneca was the previous Head Gamemaker who was killed for allowing Katniss and Peeta to live after the Nightlock berry incident. She has some experience with wielding and throwing a knife in order to finish off a wounded prey animal. During practice sessions, she found that she was also a reasonably good spear-thrower, indicating she has skill with most- if not all- projectile weapons.

Before the third quarter quell, Peeta trains Katniss hand to hand combat skills, making her an exceptional opponent. She is also trained further while living in District 13.

Later in District 13, she belatedly undergoes military training in order to participate in the fighting against the Capitol and gains enough proficiency with a gun to be selected for a sharpshooter unit, Squad 451. Katniss is a skilled tree-climber and a fast runner, which has benefited her in hunting and the Games. Additionally, she has a good singing voice, also inherited from her father, although she was reluctant to sing since his death.

She had good reflexes, mainly when carrying a bow. She could draw an arrow and strike several targets with a good amount of speed and flexibility. She uses her reflexes several times throughout the trilogy: When escaping the Cornucopia bloodbath in the 74th Hunger Games, evading fireballs when the Gamemakers create a forest inferno to draw the tributes together, when she ran from the wolf mutts, fighting Cato atop the Cornucopia, escaping the monkey mutts during the third Quarter Quell and then diverting her aim at the end of the book to assassinate President Coin.
