Bastet is the Egyptian Goddess of cats, family, love, joy, protection, music, and dance. Though never appearing directly in the Mythos, her influence is shown in Lovecraft's short story The Cats of Ulthar. In the town of Ulthar, there lived a twisted couple with a habit of capturing any cats which strayed too close to their home, brutally torturing and killing them during the night. One day, a small band of Egyptian travelers pass through the town of Ulthar. With them is a young, sickly boy by the name of Menes, who has lost his family and only has a small, black kitten with him for companionship. When the kitten vanishes, Menes is distraught, and the villagers tell him of the old couple and their heinous habits. The boy then begins to chant in a tongue none of the villagers could understand, praying towards the skies as strange shapes began to form in the clouds. That night, all the cats in Ulthar seemed to vanish without a trace, leaving the villagers perplexed. While one child says he saw all the village's cats pacing around outside the couple's dark cottage, none of the other villagers are sure whether to believe him, or not. However, the cats mysteriously return on the next day, and the couple's remains are eventually found in their home, the two seemingly having been killed and devoured. Since that day, it became law that no one in Ulthar may harm a cat.
Due to hints from this story along with Lovecraft's obsession with cats, Bastet is believed to be an "Elder God", similar to Nodens, though this term was not specifically used to refer to a specific group during Lovecraft's lifetime. Because of this, Bastet is fully treated as a deity of such status by later writers. Whether Lovecraft intended all of Egypt's gods to be real in the Mythos, or only a select few such as Bastet herself, remains unknown.
